Storify Tutorial

First…

Visit www.storify.com, click on “Storify Free Sign Up.”

Then you’ll want to fill in your information in the login screen. I recommend that you create an account rather than signing in with Twitter or Facebook.

If you like, you can click on “Take the Tour” to orient yourself to Storify.

Second…

Hover your mouse over the outline of a person, and select “Settings” from the Dropdown menu. (Note: if you did log in with your Twitter or Facebook account, you should see your own Avatar here). On the “Settings” page, you can change your account info. Click on “Connections” to link your Twitter account. You will be taken to a permissions page and will need to grant Storify access to your account.

Once you have connected your Twitter account, click on “Profile.” Your Avatar will have automatically generated. Here, you can change any and all account information you wish.

Third…

Hover your mouse over your new profile picture in the upper left again. Now, click on “Profile.” This is your public profile where your information and stories will be displayed.

Fourth…

Click on the green “New Story” button at the top left. Give your story a title (“Enter a headline”) and a description (“Enter a description).

Fifth…

Click on the Twitter icon to search within Twitter. In the search bar, you can search by keyword or hashtag (#dh, #digitalhumanities or a conference hashtag [i.e., #mla17]); you can search by user, by items you’ve favorited, or you can also load your entire timeline. (Note: I suggest using the “favorite” feature. Favorite tweets you see throughout the week, and come back to them via Storify).Screen Shot 2016-09-01 at 10.48.14 AM

Grab the tweets that you want to include in your Story and drag them from the right-hand panel into the Story pane. You can drag them around to reorder them however you choose (by day, by order or conversation, etc.)

 

Sixth…

Once you’ve selected all of the Tweets that you want to include in your story, click on the “Insert” button and select “Text” from the dropdown menu. You can write whatever you like and narrate your conversation how you choose. The text will automatically show up at the bottom of the Story, but you can reorder it just like any of the tweets you’ve added– just drag and drop. (Note: you can also double-click between Tweets for a text box to pop up). Note that you can add headings and minorly format your text (bold, italic, underline, strikethrough.)

Seventh…

Click on the blue “Publish” button once you’ve edited your Story to perfection. This publishes your story. A green notification box will pop up; follow the link to see the finished product, notify those mentioned in the story, and publicize your DH Digest! From this panel, you can edit the story if something doesn’t look right, embed it in a personal website, or change the privacy settings.

Finally…

Copy the link from your browser and paste it to Slack on the Assignments channel. Well done!
